Caring for Fine Jewelry

Sometimes ladies take better care of their shoes than their jewelry because they think that if something is made of stones and metal it’s indestructible…sorry NOT TRUE! You need to care for your jewelry as you would any other fine object with regular cleaning and proper upkeep.

There are three widely accepted methods for cleaning jewelry; a steamer, an ultrasonic unit or warm soapy water and a toothbrush. There are certain stones that require more care than others (based on treatments and their composition). The best way to keep your jewelry looking fabulous is to visit us at Hingham Jewelers and let us inspect and clean all your jewelry. Spa Day is a wonderful opportunity to have all your pieces “spruced up”. On our Spa Days, professional polishing is available by our jeweler for a small fee while you wait. Complimentary cleaning is always available while you wait. Having the rings professionally polished, however, restores them to their original luster.

If you wear your pearls on a regular basis be sure and keep an eye on the nylon/silk. Extensive wear can cause the thread to stretch and make it more prone to breakage. Pearls like rings should be inspected on an annual basis. Remember, keep the pearls away from perfume, hairspray and lotion!

Never store your jewelry so it bangs against each other. Each piece of jewelry should be kept separate as not to damage another.
