Question: is it okay to workout with your engagement ring and wedding band on? What about sleeping in jewelry?
Answer: We always recommend you take off jewelry when you're working out, or sleeping, to prevent damage.
Why: working out with your jewelry on introduces risk to your pieces. The metals that many rings are made of--gold, sterling silver, and platinum--can be bent from the impact of lifting weights or using exercise machines.
Even gripping something like a golf club can be enough to bend your rings.
Once the ring is bent, the shape changes. That can increase the risk of losing stones, since those stones were meant to sit in a ring that is perfectly round.
If you do wear your jewelry while working out, and notice the shape of your ring change, bring the piece to us immediately. We'll inspect the ring and determine if it needs repair. Our team of Goldsmiths can reshape the ring, replace missing stones, and repair any damaged prongs.
Sweat can also increase the wear and tear on your jewelry. Sterling silver can tarnish more quickly when exposed to sweat, and the rhodium plating that keeps white gold white can wear off faster as well.
In addition to working out, sleeping in your jewelry can create problems.
Sleeping in rings is generally fine, but sleeping with bracelets, earrings, or necklaces becomes more troublesome.
Over the course of the night we move around regularly. Jewelry can be flattened or pulled without you even realizing it.
Chains are notorious for being broken in the middle of the night.
Removing your jewelry before working out and sleeping will increase the lifespan of your jewelry, and prevent the need for repair.
