Selecting an engagement ring should be fun—it marks the beginning of a new chapter in life!
The reality is that choosing an engagement ring can be a daunting task. Let’s outline the general steps we follow at Hingham Jewelers, in an effort to make the process easy to manage and enjoyable.
Step 1: Finding your Inspo
Where you can do it: at home
The search for your perfect ring often starts with inspiration. That could be identifying a friend’s ring that you like, or finding photos of rings online that you like. You could literally spend days looking at styles online. Don’t stress too much. Just save the pictures that make you pause.
Once you have a few photos saved, it’s time for a visit.
2. Trying on Your Styles
Where you can do it: Hingham Jewelers
Once you have a few favorites, schedule a consultation with us. You can come in by yourself, or with your partner, for this initial visit. Our team will have you try on styles that match your inspiration photos. The rings we have may not be the exact same, but they’ll likely be similar.
This is when we confirm if what you like in photos is the same as what you like on your finger. Sometimes the answer may surprise you—what you think you may like could be wildly different than what you like once you try things on.
Try on styles you don’t even think you like during this visit—you really don’t know what you’ll think until you can see it on you!
During this visit members of our team will make detailed notes on styles that you like. We'll also measure your ring size.
3. Select the Stone
Where you can do it: Hingham Jewelers
After we have details of the styles you like, it’s time to get to work.
We always have a selection of lab grown and natural diamonds in our store, but once we know exactly what you’re looking for, we’ll source a hand-picked selection just for you. Typically we’ll bring in a few similar stones, in either the price or quality range you’re looking for, so you can compare in person.
Differences in diamonds can be almost impossible to assess online, so this in-person review with an expert is invaluable. We’ll show you what to look for, so you can decide for yourself what speaks to you.
Again, some couples select a stone together, while other couples will start to split off at this point—with one partner taking the lead after a joint initial visit.
4. Designing the Ring
Where you can do it: at home
Once the stone is selected, we can finalize the details of the actual ring. We will take the measurements of the stone and apply that to the styles identified during the initial consultation.
Our design team will often generate a video rendering of what the ring will look like, so you can visualize the final product. You can review that from home, discussing any tweaks virtually. Of course, if you rather, this can be done with us in person.
In some cases we’ll even create a life-size wax model, if you want to "see" the ring before it's produced.
5. The Final Presentation
A custom designed ring often takes a few weeks to produce. That’s generally the process outlined here. While the ring is being created, many people will finalize details of the proposal: reservations, or sometimes photographers, etc.
Not everyone selects a custom engagement ring. Sometimes folks will come in and purchase a “ready to rock” ring, which can be selected out of our showcase, and taken home that same day.
Whichever type ring you think is perfect, Hingham Jewelers is here to help. We are your advocate, helping you choose what is right for you. That’s our goal, regardless of whether you want to spend $1,000, or $100,000!
